It’s been a while since I posted about the new adventure that is the house in Istria. In fact, the last post just showed a photo of the keys and a glass of fizz…

Yes, on Monday 5th December 2016, we signed all of the official paperwork, made the payment, and that was it. The house was ours. This does make it sound all relatively straight forward – and actually it was, but we think we hit on a very fortunate set of circumstances. I’ve not revealed too much so far about the house, as didn’t want to jinx things, but think I can now be a bit forthcoming, and begin to tell the story of how we found what we’d been looking for…

THE STORY OF THE HOUSE

We’ve talked lots about moving abroad and have always harboured a desire to move to Bergamo, in northern Italy – and had started to seriously consider doing a long term let in the city to test the waters. But, however much we adored Bergamo, we could never find anywhere that was quite right. We went to Croatia for the very first time in June 2016, on the recommendation of a design client of ours, spending a few days in the beautiful Dalmatian coastal town of Zadar. On our return, we spoke to another client who told us if we’d loved Zadar, to check out Istria on our next trip. We were intrigued enough to begin googling Istria and the towns she had mentioned – Porec, Pula, Rovinj – and we had a wow factor moment. The internet images were just stunning, so we delved a little deeper and started, out of curiosity, checking out properties. And then, we saw this…

…and although on Right Move Abroad, it was a private sale. Not really considering where this could ultimately lead us, we emailed the owner. No reply. So we got a bit bolder and phoned the mobile number on the online house advert – no reply. (We hadn’t clocked the board above, on the online images at this time). We repeated this a few more times, with no response. Most people would have probably given up at this point – and to be fair, we did think it was a non-starter. The price was just too good to be true – especially if all of the details were factually correct – but with a seller who was not getting back to us, it didn’t seem overly promising.

But, we had a feeling and some feelings you just can’t ignore. And before we knew it, we were flying out to Pula in Istria, to find The House…
