Every time we pop over to Formby, a visit to Antony Gormley’s Iron Men on Crosby Beach is a must. Every single time we visit, I see them in a different way, depending on the time of day, the light, the weather or the height of the tide. I’ve never gone and not seen them – even at the highest of tides, I always managed to see at least the top of a head. Not last Sunday lunchtime however. The road to the beach, at the Burbo Point end, was closed to traffic because the weather was so wild and windy with waves crashing up onto the car park…

A trip over to this particular stretch of coast wouldn’t be the same without the Iron Men, so we returned for sunset. The tide was right out and there were the Iron Men, standing tall and proud and looking out across the Irish Sea…
